That Friday Feeling

Hello everyone. Today, is Friday. The best day of the week, the one that gives you that..well….Friday feeling.
for most people the Friday Feeling is attributed to the joy you feel at reaching the end of another working week, but this post isn’t actually about that.
I once read a quote (can’t remember where, probably facebook or somewhere similar) that said “When you find a job you love, you will never work a day again”
I never really understood that quote, I mean even a good job is just a job, right??????
That was certainly true of every other job I’ve had, but now I have found a place where that quote applies perfectly, so please let me introduce you to the cause of my alternative Friday feeling…..

L.I.F.E Leisure Idependance Friendship Enablement Services

This is a company set up by my very good friend Craig Howley. It would be very difficult to explain L.I.F.E without telling you a little about the phenomenon that is Craig (he will read this i’m sure but I don’t mind him knowing how cool I think he is).

Now I have known Craig for the past 27 years since I was at school (my god I’m so old) and for nearly all that time he has worked looking after people with learning disabilities.
Craig has always been a larger than life character, always the joker, a big kid and natural born entertainer.
I am now gonna embarrass him by showing the earliest pic I have of him, this was a drunken weekend away in Glastonbury. Craig was half of a tent erecting duo called Bodgit and Leggit. You would never have guessed why?

Another of Craig in his favorite passtime, dressing up (not like that, you naughty lot).

Fast forward a few years from that camping trip and I began working in a residential home that worked along side the daycentre Craig worked at. He was very popular with the clients there, everybody loved him.
However the nature of care for adults with learning dissabilities is dramatically changing at the moment due to the austerity measures our government is implimenting (thanks to the bankers of the world) and the resulting service being offered to our clients is not the always able to give what they need or even (shock horror) what they want.   Now many of us carers don’t like these changes but few people have the balls to do something about it.
Craig is one of those people (along side his partner Adrian) and so set up L.I.F.E as an alternative to traditional day centres or personal assistants.

So why does L.I.F.E give me a Friday feeling???
Well obviously it is not the joy of being at the end of the weekend and looking forward to no more work for 2 days. My Friday feeling is actually a sense of pleasure that comes from looking forward to going to work. This sense of pleasure comes from both the people I work with and the people I support.

Those I work with are a fab bunch of people, who have a real passion for the job we do and try at all times to carry out their role as well as they can.
And now I will let you into a secret, it really isnt a hard job. The main aim of our job is…. (drum roll)……… To make people happy! I mean how cool is that? OK, obviously there is more to it than that, but that is our ultimate goal and this is such a refreshing change  from the attitudes of many social support providers who treat individuals as no more than numbers.
In many services as long as  they are physically well cared for then it is considered job well done.
Fridays are especially cool because we do Karaoke.
I have never before met a group of people that sing with so much enthusiasm ( and yes if I’m honest, so badly) as the guys we look after, and it is a pleasure to watch.
Whats more I am one of the best singers there! ( I know it is wrong to take personal satisfaction from that fact, but hey, I’m only human after all).
We also do nail art with the ladies (and any gentlemen that want to join in) on a Friday.
These ladies may not often get the chance to have girly things like this done for them as it is not seen as essential. I think that attitude is pants, who out there doesn’t feel good after a pampering session?

I would love to put loads of pics of all the gorgeous people we support and what we get up to, but that would go against confidentiality, but I did manage to get this picture from last weeks Halloween kareoke session.

If you can check for yourselves the fun we get up to check out the website L.I.F.E

    Love ya Craig!
I remember that camping holiday well – that tent was mainly held up with good vibes and gaffer tape!
But seriously you are awesome doing what you do for these people, both of you!
Everyone deserves a bit of that Friday feeling xx

This is such a blooming brilliant post — for more than one reason. I LOVE the fact you love your job so much! I LOVE the fact you and your lovely school-friend are still in touch. My first boyfriend and I are still great friends. It’s worrisome to think that he and I went out with each other nearly 30 years ago — and he now has a 17 year old son now (the age he was when he went out with me incidentally) but I love it that we’re still such great friends after such a long time 🙂
    And finally — I always love a fellow Glastonbury reveller 😉 #PoCoLo

Ahh, I must confess to never having gone to the festival. This was a spiritual (of the alcoholic type) weekend visit to Glastonbury village and the Tor.
It is great that were still great mates after all this time. Its also cool that both of our eldest sons were born a week apart from each other and were also the best of friends all through school and still great friends now xx

What a lovely post! It’s wonderful to see people loving their jobs and when their jobs just becomes a part of their lives…it is no longer distinct and separate. I have work mates who are just mates now. I don’t even think oh they’re colleagues! What an amazing job you and Craig are doing! A big shout out to Craig from me (even though I don’t know him) because I how hard the industry can be with all the red tape, funding crisis and yadayadayada. Good on both of you for making a difference. I would so love to set up something for underprivileged kids, that’s my goal. Some of the children I have met during my course of my work have been totally amazing and truly truly truly inspiring!

Hi Tracey, if only the world was full of more people like you and Craig. I’ve actually got a lump in my throat (the thought that any lady or gentleman could be thought of as not good enough for a bit of pampering bought it on).

Giving people a reason to smile and letting them know they are as good as anyone else (maybe not at singing) is priceless.

I love stories like this as it helps restore my faith in human nature, thank you for sharing

Aaah Tracey, it’s so lovely that you love this so much! I used to feel like this about my old job, but by the end, was weighed down by the shift work, the lack of staff, the tiredness… I hope to regain the essence of what you are conveying here, when I go back to work when the babies are older! Craig sounds like a great person, and the people you look after are lucky to have you!
