Top 10 Stalker Songs
Hello readers. Today I’m talking about stalker songs. I love listening to music. I’m also partially deaf. So often I have little idea what the actual lyrics are to the songs I love. One song I’ve loved forever is Don Henleys Boys of Summer (only Don Henley’s version, all others should be banned).
The other week one of my guys asked to sing it at karaoke so I had a chance to see the lyrics. I was really surprised that it’s not a sweet love song, but rather more sinister.
This got me wondering about what other ‘love songs’ should actually be relabeled. So I did a bit of research and can now present my top 10 stalker songs.
#10 – I Want You To Want Me (Cheep Trick)
A very early 80’s track. This one isn’t immediately obvious entry on a stalker songs list but it’s got potential.
” I want you to want me,
I need you to need me. “
and so it goes on. This is a person who is very focused on their own wants and needs. Possibly not a fully developed stalker, but not someone you would want as a boyfriend.
#9 – Don’t You Want Me (Human League)
I love a bit of 80’s retro and this is a classic song. It isn’t the worst stalker song in the world, but he definitely isn’t taking the breakup well.
” Dont forget its me who put you where you are now,
and I can put you back down too. “
and a bit further in the song.
” It’s much too late to find,
You think you’ve changed your mind.
You’d better change it back or we will both be sorry. “
Using threats to coerce the lady into going back to is not acceptable behaviour. He really needs to accept it’s over and back off.
#8 – Shiver (Coldplay)
Bringing things more up to date now with this Coldplay track. A tale of a man who feels he is being ignored by the object of his desire.
” I’ll always be waiting for you.
So you know how much I need you.
But you never even see me do you?
And is this my final chance of getting you? “
If she doesn’t know he is there, then how can she know his waiting or is evidence of how much he needs her. That line demonstrates classic faulty stalker logic.
” Don’t you shiver, shiver, shiver. “
Why would she shiver? Apart from realising she is being stalked and being scared shitless!
#7 – Boys of Summer (Don Henley)
As mentioned above I love this song. However, even if the lyrics about how she made him crazy and he made her scream are just about sex, this is still very much a stalker song.
” I’m driving by your house,
Though I know you’re not home”
If she isn’t there, neither should he be. Visiting someones home while knowing they aren’t there is classic stalker behaviour.
” I don’t understand what happened to our love.
But, babe I’m gonna get you back,
I’m gonna show you what I’m made of. “
Maybe she doesn’t want him back. It’s also quite likely she already knows what his love is made of and that’s why she isn’t with him any more.
” I thought I knew what love was, what did I know.
Those days are gone forever.
I should just let them go, but…”
Oh, he so nearly had it right then. He SHOULD just let it go. No ifs and certainly no buts.
#6 – One Way Or Another ( Blondie)
Another classic track, from 1979 ( again we will ignore all modern cover versions). it is quite easy to see why this song is on the list. It also demonstrates that it’s not only men who can become stalkers.
” One way or another,
I’m gonna find ya, I’m gonna get ya, get ya, get ya.”
” I will drive past your house.
And if the lights are all down, I’ll see who’s around. “
” I’ll walk down the mall, stand over by the wall.
Where I can see it all, find out who ya’ call. “
Okay, I can’t imagine there were many blokes on the planet who would have turned Debbie Harry down in her day, but even so. She is going to stalk his house, follow him and find out who he is phoning. She is a determined female stalker.
#5 – Two Steps Behind (Def Leppard)
An early 90’s track this time. I can remember buying the LP with this on (if anyone asks what and LP is I will cry) and thought it was such a beautiful acoustic track till I read the lyrics.
” You can run but you can never hide.
From the shadow that’s creepin’ up beside you. “
What is this shadow? It could be a metaphor for the hidden love that the stalker believes she has for him. In reality it is more likely to be an actual shadow from the stalker.
” Whatever you do,
I’ll be two steps behind you.
Wherever you go,
And I’ll be there to remind you.
That it only takes a minute of your precious time.
To turn around,
I’ll be two steps behind. “
And there it is. He is quite proud of the fact that he will be stalking her every move, and clearly wants her to see him doing this.
#4 – Walking After You (Foo Fighters)
I love the Foo Fighters. I love Dave Grohl. I’m sure he must have had some weird arse stalkers in his time and yet he has still written a very stalker ex boyfriend song.
” If you’d accept surrender,
I’ll give up some more.
Weren’t you adored.
I cannot be without you,
Matter of fact.
I’m on your back. “
While the idea of surrendering to Dave sounds quite mmmm, surrendering to the demands of a psycho ex is not something anyone should be doing.
” If you walk out on me,
I’m walking after you. “
Clearly he has no intentions of letting the lady end the relationship.
#3 – Keep On Loving You (Rio Speedwagon)
Back to the 80’s again (where a lot of these songs appear to have originated). This is another tale of a rejected ex who is not accepting the relationship is over.
” You should have seen by the look in my eyes, baby.
There was somethin’ missin’.
You should have known by the tone of my voice, maybe.
But you didn’t listen. “
Already he is taking a very aggressive tone.
” And I meant, every word I said,
When I said that I loved you,
I meant that I loved you forever. “
- That could come across as a very sweet romantic sentiment, however given the general tone of the song, it comes across as distinctly threatening.
#2 – Every Breath You Take (Sting)
Now until very recently I would have said this song was the all time number I on any list of stalker songs. There is nothing sweet or romantic about it. In fact it has always given me the creeps when I hear it on the radio.
” Oh, can’t you see,
You belong to me. “
Claiming ownership of another person is down right freaky and wrong.
” Every single day,
Every word you say,
Every game you play,
Every night you stay,
I’ll be watching you. “
Quite clearly the rantings of a very deranged stalking ex.
#1 – Run for your life (The Beatles)
I never thought I would hear a worse entry in a list of stalker songs than Every Breath You Take. Further if one had existed I would have not credited it as being written by the fab four. But in a time before he was preaching about world peace, John Lennon co-wrote this little song with Paul McCartney. It is full on psycho stalker material and definitely deserves the number 1 spot in this list.
” Well, I’d rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man.
You better keep your head, little girl,
Or you won’t know where I am “
Can you get much creapier than that? I think not, but if you know of any other stalker songs that deserve to be on this list please let me know.
